Nigel Stock, Counsellor
What I Help With
I provide counselling support for a wide range of life challenges, including:
my approach
I am a person-centred integrative counsellor. This means, my training and foundations are in person-centred counselling as developed by Carl Rogers. I will personalise your counselling experience to suit your needs and aims; I will include elements and techniques from other modalities and theories such as Transactional Analysis and Gestalt therapy. I draw on parts work, psychoeducation and somatic awareness. You are the expert in your own life!

What does all this jargon mean? It basically means you bring the ideas you want to explore, you set the agenda and we work together at your pace. Numerous research shows that it is the therapeutic relationship between client and counsellor that creates a safe space for you to explore your emotions, thoughts and behaviours. This therapeutic relationship will lead to you having a deeper understanding of yourself and feeling better.
Identity & Inclusion
Many of us are considering our own neurodivergence and how this may impact our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and relationships. I have recently been diagnosed with autism and I am proud to include that as part of my identity. Counselling does not seek to make you less neurodivergent; you are who you are and this should be celebrated! Counselling can, however, develop your self-awareness and help you to understand your qualities, barriers and traits and explore how you interact with the world. We are all unique and I can help you discover your authentic self.
As a gay man and proud member of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ community, I can provide a non-judgemental and compassionate space for you to consider and explore your identity, gender, sexuality and relationships. I am body-positive and feel everyone has the right to be their authentic self. You may also feel more comfortable sharing your history, achievements and struggles with a gay man who understands the complexities of growing up gay and being LGBTQ+ in today’s world. Even if you do not identify as LGBTQ+, you may feel more comfortable with a gay male counsellor. I am here to provide that space, and the relationship you need to truly become yourself.
Many of us do not conform to the heteronormative monogamous relationship and are looking to explore a range of different relationship types. Sex can be an important part of our lives and you may wish to explore sexual preferences, kinks and fantasies. I am a sex-positive counsellor who can provide the space to discuss all areas of your sex life, fantasies and relationship types so you can work towards fulfilling your relationship and sexual needs.
You are the expert in your own life.

Why should I embark on counselling?
Many of us need someone impartial to talk to about our struggles, worries or life events that have left us feeling low, confused or detached from friends, family or ourselves. Maybe you are feeling that life is hard and you are looking for ways to explore this and make changes. You may come with a specific issue to address or just because life is feeling difficult. Either way, counselling provides time for you to explore past events, feelings and emotions in order to deepen your self awareness. Each session is tailored to your needs and we discuss what works best for you.
How does the counselling session run?
I will book a slot for you which is usually at the same time and place each week (you will receive automatic reminders). Each session is 50 mins long and starts on the hour and finishes 50 mins later. For our first session, I can meet you outside and show you to the waiting area and our allocated room. During our session, you can talk about whatever is on your mind. I will listen and empathise with you, asking questions, reflecting, paraphrasing or summarising to help you delve deeper into your issues and move closer to understanding and contentment. I will also notice how your body reacts. As our therapeutic relationship develops, you may find you start to go deeper into your past, your childhood and previous experiences and relationships.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
You may come with a specific issue to discuss which you may feel is resolved within a fairly short number of sessions. You may have deeper issues to explore which may take months or even years. We discuss your aims and goals at the beginning and we reassess these as time goes by. You can decide when you feel counselling should finish and we will work towards your ending together. Basically, I am here for you for as long as you need.
